What is the Autumnal Equinox Day?
Autumn Equinox Day occurs around September 23 every year. It has been a national holiday in Japan since 1948.
The equinox, the time when day and night are of approximately equal length. It occurs twice a year around September 22 and March 20.
The Japanese spend the Autumn equinox day to pay respects to ancestors because Buddhists see the day when the border between the places of the living and the dead is the thinnest. Many people get together as a family and visit their family graves.
